Clogged Kitchen or Laundry Drains

Clogged Drains in the Laundry or Kitchen Area?  Keep Drains Flowing; That's What We Deliver!

Drains are devices that allow water or other liquids to flow away from a certain area, such as a sink, a bathtub, a roof, or a street. They come in different shapes, sizes, and designs, depending on their purpose and location. Connected to pipes, sewers, or stormwater systems, drains carry the drained water to a more useful or safe place.

Drainage in the laundry room typically will run from the washing machine to an outlet or be located in a separate wash basin. Of all drains in your home, the kitchen sink is one of the most used drains in the house. Because of the nature of it's use, it is also a very common source of clogged drains.

We include great service guarantees on all our drain work as well.

There are many possible reasons why a drain may block up, but some of the most common ones are:

Hair and soap buildup: Hair and soap are often the main culprit of clogging bathroom drains, especially in showers, bathtubs, and sinks. Hair can get tangled up with soap and other substances, forming a sticky mass that can block the water flow. Soap can also leave a residue that can coat the pipes and trap other debris.

  • Food waste and grease:  Food waste and grease can easily clog kitchen drains, especially if they are not disposed of properly. Food particles can accumulate in the pipes, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and odors. Grease can also solidify and stick to the pipes, reducing the diameter and causing blockages.
  • Foreign objects: Sometimes, foreign objects, such as toys, jewelry, wipes, diapers, or feminine products, can accidentally fall or be flushed down the drains, causing obstructions. These objects can be too large or too hard to pass through the pipes, and they can also damage the pipes or the drain system.
  • Tree roots: Tree roots can grow into the pipes, especially if there are cracks or leaks in the pipes. Tree roots can act like a net, catching and holding other materials that go down the drain. Tree roots can also cause the pipes to collapse or burst, leading to serious blockages and damage.
  • Leaves and dirt: Leaves and dirt can clog outdoor drains, such as roof drains or street drains, especially during the fall or rainy seasons. Leaves and dirt can cover the drain openings or fill up the drain pipes, preventing the water from flowing away. Leaves and dirt can also decompose and create a sludge that can block the drains.

Drain Remedies You Can Try At Home: What Works Best For Unclogging A Drain?

We get calls about this quite often. A clogged drain can be a frustrating and messy problem, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many ways to unclog a drain without using harsh chemicals or calling a plumber. Here are some of the most effective methods:

  • Use a plunger. A plunger can create suction and pressure that can dislodge the clog and allow water to flow freely. To use a plunger, remove any plug or cover from the drain and fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger. Place the plunger over the drain and pump it up and down vigorously for up to half a minute. If the water drains, the clog is cleared. If not, repeat the process until it does.
  • Use baking soda and vinegar. Baking soda and vinegar are natural ingredients that can react with each other and create bubbles and fizz that can break up the clog. To use this method, remove any standing water from the sink and pour one cup of baking soda down the drain. Then, pour one cup of white vinegar down the drain and cover it with a stopper or a rag. Wait for 15 minutes and then flush the drain with hot water.
  • Use a drain snake. A drain snake is a flexible wire that can reach deep into the drain and either push through or pull out the clog. To use a drain snake, remove the pop-up assembly in the sink and feed the wire into the drain while cranking the handle. When you feel some resistance, you have reached the clog. Try to hook the clog and pull it back up or break it up and push it through. Then, run hot water to flush the  drain.

  • Use a drain bladder. A drain bladder is a device that attaches to a garden hose and inflates with water pressure. It can fill up the pipe and force the clog out with a powerful jet of water. To use a drain bladder, insert it into the drain and connect it to a hose. Turn on the water and wait until the bladder expands and the water stops flowing. Then, turn off the water and pull out the bladder. The clog should be cleared.

These are some of the ways to unclog a drain without harsh chemicals. However, if none of these methods work or if the clog is too severe, it's time to call the professionals at Able Home Services to tackle the situation.
