Embracing Efficiency with Tankless Water Heaters

What are some of the advantages to having a tankless water heater?

According to Energy Star, a tankless water heater can save you up to $100 per year on your energy bills compared to a standard tank-style water heater.

Another advantage of a tankless water heater is that it can provide an unlimited supply of hot water. As long as you have enough water and power, a tankless water heater can heat water on demand, without running out of hot water or having to wait for the tank to refill. This can be very convenient and comfortable for your household, especially if you have a large family or use a lot of hot water for bathing, washing, or cooking.

There is sometimes a confusion between this type of water heater and the smaller and usually tanked unit known as Instant Hot Water Heaters which are also sometimes referred to as tankless units.  Unlike the small tanked instant hot unit, a whole home tankless water heater will not provide instant hot water as some in the past have assumed; however, it does provide on-demand heating in what is sometimes referred to as "endless hot water".

A third advantage of a tankless water heater is that it takes up less space and has a longer expected lifespan than a tank-style water heater; it can last up to 15 to 20 years or more, compared to 5 to 10 years for a tank-style water heater. A tankless water heater is usually mounted on a wall (indoor or outdoor) or in a closet space, and it does not require a large storage tank that can take up valuable floor or closet space. A tankless water heater also has fewer parts that can wear out or corrode over time.  Additionally, a tankless water heater has a lower risk of leaking or causing water damage, as it does not store water that can burst or overflow from the tank.

How Do You Maintain a Tankless Water Heater?

  • Cleaning the air filter: The air filter prevents dust and debris from entering the combustion chamber of the water heater. You should check and clean the air filter at least once a month, or more often if you live in a dusty area or the tankless unit is placed in a dusty area. To clean the air filter, remove it from the water heater, rinse it with plain water, and let it dry completely before reinstalling it.

  • Flushing the heat exchanger: The heat exchanger is the part of the water heater that heats the water. Over time, it can accumulate mineral deposits that can reduce its efficiency and performance. You should flush the heat exchanger with a special solution made specifically for this purpose at least once a year, or more often if you have hard water. To flush the heat exchanger, you need to turn off the power and water supply to the water heater, connect a pump and hoses to the cold and hot water valves or the bypass valve, and circulate the solution through the water heater for about an hour. Then, you need to rinse the water heater with clean water and reconnect the power and water supply.
  • Checking the venting system: The venting system is the part of the water heater that expels the exhaust gases from the combustion process. You should check the venting system for any signs of damage, blockage, or leakage at least once a year, or more often if you notice any problems with the water heater. To check the venting system, inspect the vent pipe, the termination cap, and the air intake for any cracks, holes, dents, or obstructions. You also need to make sure that the venting system is properly sealed and supported. If you find any issues with the venting system, you need to repair or replace it as soon as possible.
